Robert Vadra eyes Amethi Lok Sabha seat, stresses local sentiments for Gandhi family representation

Robert Vadra, the businessman and spouse of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has expressed his interest in contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Amethi, signalling a potential entry into active politics.

In a recent interview with ANI, Vadra underscored the sentiments of the people of Amethi, who he believes expect him to represent their constituency if he decides to pursue a parliamentary role.

Taking aim at Union Minister Smriti Irani, who defeated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Amethi, Vadra mentioned that there is a perception among the locals that they erred in electing her, referring to her victory as a significant upset.

Vadra, hinting at his possible candidacy from Amethi, acknowledged the strong historical ties between the Gandhi family and the region, emphasising the desire among locals for a Gandhi family member to return as their representative. He also expressed his preference for Priyanka Gandhi to contest the seat first before considering his own candidacy.

"They want a member of the Gandhi family returns, they will ensure the person's victory with a huge margin, they also expect that if I take my first step in politics, and think of becoming an MP, then I should represent Amethi," he said.

"I want Priyanka (Gandhi) to become an MP first and then I feel I can also come...I interact with people and there are MPs from different parties. They (MPs) ask me to come along with their party and ask me the reasons for the delay. They also assure me of their support...so different parties across the country are asking me to come along...I have friendships with a lot of people above the party lines," he further added.

While Vadra highlighted the encouragement he has received from various political circles across party lines to enter politics, he highlighted that the final decision regarding Amethi and Rae Bareli would be made by the Congress leadership.

Reflecting on his past involvement in Amethi during the 1999 Lok Sabha polls, Vadra recalled the challenges and hard work put into the campaign alongside Priyanka Gandhi, fostering a sense of camaraderie and support among the people.

Regarding the current political landscape in Amethi, Vadra criticised the incumbent MP, alleging a lack of frequent visits, progress initiatives, and focusing instead on baseless allegations and criticisms of the Gandhi family. He highlighted the dissatisfaction among constituents and their desire for a Gandhi family member to represent them again.

As the Congress party is yet to announce its candidates for the Amethi and Rae Bareli seats in Uttar Pradesh, where it is in alliance with the Samajwadi Party for the Lok Sabha polls, Vadra's comments add to the anticipation surrounding these crucial electoral constituencies.

The Congress election committee in Uttar Pradesh has previously recommended members of the Gandhi family to contest from these constituencies, a decision that aligns with the party's historical ties and influence in these regions.
